What Writing a Novel Taught Me About Life

← All posts

I’ve been a writer since childhood. I started crafting poems at age
seven and never stopped. I’ve released three non-fiction books and
write many articles for work.

This year, something wildly unexpected happened.

I picked up a fantasy story I had written as a teen. It was unfinished, just three pages and some character names. As I read it, I fell in love with it all over again.

In December 2024, I thought it might be a fun holiday project to continue where I left off. I had no idea I would become completely obsessed.

Once I started, I could not stop. I wrote day and night. When I wasn’t writing, the story filled my thoughts. I even dreamed about it and woke up eager to get to the keyboard.

What began as a short story grew into a full novel, which I finished in August 2025. Four test readers have read it, and I am now in the editing phase. I am also beginning work on books two and three to complete a trilogy.

This wasn’t just a project. It was a calling.

While I can’t explain exactly why it happened, here are a few lessons I’ve taken from the experience:

  • When a dream calls, answer it: You don’t need to understand the what, where, or how. Start, and clarity will come.

  • Trust the process: I often didn’t know how I would resolve a plot point or character dilemma. By showing up day after day, the story always revealed a way forward.

  • If you’re stuck, walk outside: Movement brings perspective. I have solved way more writing problems outside than at my desk.

  • Compassion is a strength: A central theme in my novel is power. Without empathy, power fractures everything. Whether leading a team or shaping a story, understanding others’ pain creates connection.

  • Creation requires surrender: The moment I stopped gripping the outcome and worrying about what others might think, the work began to breathe and expand its truth.

I hope these reflections resonate. Thank you for your connection, trust, and inspiration. Wishing you all the best in the year ahead!
