Engineers in the New Global Virtual Market: Best Practices for Cross-Border Project Management

The days of designing in a vacuum are behind most engineers today. As business has become more mobile, global, and virtual, engineers are finding themselves increasingly sharing responsibilities for results with people outside the United States. In 2008, 2009, and 2010 about 80% of presenter Vicki Flier Hudson’s work has been helping engineers to work effectively and efficiently with their global partners in India. In this presentation, using a case study of engineering at a large multinational corporation we will explore the best practices for engineering across borders. We will look at how culture, language, virtual communication, time zone differences and process differences impact efficiency and productivity. Members will walk away with three concrete strategies to improve their work between U.S. based operations and those overseas.
